Symphysis pubis dysfunction, often referred to as SPD or symphysisbetegség in Hungarian, is a condition characterized by pain and instability in the pubic symphysis, the joint at the front of the pelvis. This joint is normally held together by strong ligaments. During pregnancy, hormonal changes, particularly an increase in relaxin, can cause these ligaments to loosen, allowing the joint to become more mobile and potentially leading to pain.

The primary symptom of symphysis pubis dysfunction is pain in the pubic bone area, which can range from mild to severe. This pain may radiate to the hips, groin, inner thighs, or lower back. Activities that typically worsen the pain include walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg, lifting the legs, and turning over in bed. Some individuals may also experience a clicking or grinding sensation in the pubic joint.

The exact cause of SPD is not fully understood, but it is commonly associated with pregnancy due to hormonal influences and the mechanical stress placed on the pelvis as the fetus grows. Other contributing factors can include previous pelvic injuries, a history of back pain, or multiple pregnancies.

Diagnosis is usually based on a physical examination and the patient's reported symptoms. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or MRI may be used in some cases to assess the joint's stability.

Treatment for symphysis pubis dysfunction typically focuses on pain management and maintaining pelvic stability. This can include physiotherapy, pelvic support belts, rest, avoiding aggravating activities, and pain relief medication that is safe for pregnancy. In most cases, symptoms improve significantly after childbirth as hormone levels return to normal and the ligaments regain their firmness. However, in some individuals, the pain may persist beyond pregnancy, requiring ongoing management.
