Firmness is the degree to which a material, object, or tissue resists deformation when subjected to an applied force. It is a general property that reflects the internal structure and interactions of its components. In practice, firmness is closely related to stiffness and rigidity but depends on factors such as deformation rate, temperature, and moisture. Distinguishing terms like softness, elasticity, and hardness helps contextualize firmness across disciplines.

In materials science, firmness is often described by the stress–strain response and is linked to elastic moduli, yield strength, and plasticity. A higher Young's modulus or greater yield strength typically corresponds to a firmer material. Hardness tests (for example, Rockwell or Vickers) give a practical surrogate measure of firmness by quantifying resistance to indentation under a specific load.

In food science, firmness refers to the texture that resists compression or penetration. It influences mouthfeel and is affected by moisture, structure, and temperature. Objective measures use texture analyzers to compress or shear samples, producing a force–deformation curve. Subjective assessments may accompany instrumental data to describe perceived firmness, as in fruits, vegetables, or processed foods.

In medicine and biology, firmness is assessed by palpation or imaging to gauge tissue condition. Abnormal firmness can indicate fibrosis, edema, tumor growth, or inflammation; conversely, atrophy or nerve damage may reduce firmness. The term also appears in dentistry and ergonomics to describe gum, bone, or soft-tissue consistency.

In geotechnical contexts, soil or rock firmness relates to bearing capacity and stiffness. Tests such as penetration or shear strength measurements quantify resistance to deformation and displacement, informing construction and agricultural practices.

Because firmness is often influenced by subjective perception and testing conditions, standards carefully specify the method, direction of loading, and rate of deformation to ensure comparability across materials and studies.
