Syövytyksessä, commonly translated as etching in English, is a process used in various industries and crafts to carve or engrave a surface by the use of a corrosive acid or other aggressive substance. This technique can be applied to metals, glass, stone, and even some plastics. The core principle involves selectively removing material from the surface to create a desired pattern or design.

The process typically begins with preparing the surface to be etched. This often involves cleaning it thoroughly to remove any oils, dirt, or existing coatings. A protective layer, known as a resist, is then applied to the areas that are intended to remain untouched. This resist can be made from various materials, such as wax, asphaltum, or specialized photoresists, depending on the substrate and the desired level of detail.

Once the resist is in place, the object is immersed in or exposed to the etching agent, which is usually a liquid acid or chemical solution. The etching agent attacks and dissolves the unprotected areas of the surface, gradually deepening the engraving. The duration of exposure and the concentration of the etching agent are carefully controlled to achieve the desired depth and effect.

After the etching is complete, the resist is removed, revealing the etched design. The object is then thoroughly cleaned to neutralize any remaining etching agent and remove any residue.
