Syringoma is a benign skin tumor that occurs due to the abnormal growth of sweat gland ducts. Also known as canalicular adenoma, it is a common dermatological condition that affects both men and women. Syringoma typically appears as small, firm, or hard nodules under the skin, often with a central depression.

These growths can occur anywhere on the body, but they most commonly arise on the eyelids and the armpits, where the apocrine sweat glands are most prominent. Syringoma usually presents without any symptoms, but it can be painful in some cases. In rare instances, syringoma can cause irritation and vision problems if it occurs on the eyelid.

The exact cause of syringoma is not known, but it is believed to be related to the abnormal lifetime of sweat gland duct cells. It is also considered to be a developmental condition that may be influenced by genetics. Syringomas are known to occur in some individuals in large numbers, but they are also found in people who have no known family history of the condition.

Diagnosis of syringoma is typically based on physical examination and medical history. A skin biopsy may be performed to confirm the presence of syringoma. In most cases, syringomas are harmless and can be left alone or surgically removed for cosmetic reasons. Treatment options include laser surgery and cryosurgery to destroy the affected cells, although these methods may not completely eliminate the growths.
