Symfoniorkesteret (Norwegian for "the symphony orchestra") refers to a large, formally organized ensemble of musicians performing orchestral repertoire from the Classical period to contemporary works. Typical instrumentation includes strings (violins, violas, cellos, double basses), woodwinds (flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons), brass (horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba) and a range of percussion; some works add harp, piano, or nonstandard instruments.

Historically developed from 18th- and 19th-century European orchestras, symfoniorkestret became central to public concert life, opera, and ballet.
