Svamptyp is a term used in Swedish mycology to describe a basic, non-formal classification of fungi based on observable traits of their fruiting bodies and their general ecological role. It functions as a practical grouping in field guides and educational materials, helping to organize the vast diversity of fungi into recognizable types rather than strict taxonomic ranks.

In practice, svamptyp groups reflect common field forms such as agaricoid mushrooms with gilled caps, polypores bearing pores on the underside, puffballs that release spores through rupture, and boletoid or coral-like forms. These categories align with major fungal clades, particularly Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, but svamptyp remains a morphology- and ecology-centered concept rather than a formal taxonomic level.

Morphology, spore production and life cycle underlie svamptyp distinctions. Many svamptyps are identified by cap shape, color, gill attachment, presence or absence of a ring or volva, and spore print color. Molecular techniques such as DNA sequencing increasingly complement traditional characteristics to resolve ambiguities between visually similar groups.

Ecology and importance vary by svamptyp. Some are saprotrophic, decomposing leaf litter and wood; others form mycorrhizal associations with plant roots, aiding nutrient exchange; and some are parasitic. Distributions span forests, grasslands and urban environments, reflecting ecological versatility and habitat specificity of different svamptyps.

Identification and safety considerations are important in field use. Accurate recognition often requires combining macroscopic features with habitat context, and, when possible, microscopic or molecular data. Foragers are advised to exercise caution due to toxic look-alikes and regional variation among species.
