Many cultivated fruits, vegetables, grains, and animal products are widely edible, but misidentification in the wild can be dangerous. Edible items may still pose risks for certain people, including children, pregnant individuals, those with allergies, or people taking specific medications.

Determining edibility relies on reliable sources, local knowledge, and tested guides rather than taste or appearance alone. Identification errors, regional variations, and variability among cultivars or seasons can affect safety. Edibility does not imply universal safety or high nutrition; it is a property of feasibility of consumption, contingent on preparation, health, and context.
