surkastumia

Surkastumia is a Finnish medical term describing tissue or organ atrophy, the process by which a structure decreases in size due to loss of cells or reduced cell size. It denotes a functional decline that accompanies shrinking tissue mass and diminished physiological capacity. In Finnish medical literature, surkastumia can refer to various organs, most commonly skeletal muscle atrophy but also atrophy of cardiac, neural, or other tissues.

Causes and mechanisms of surkastumia are diverse. Disuse or immobilization, such as prolonged bed rest or lack of physical activity, is a frequent cause of skeletal muscle atrophy. Aging, described in medical contexts as sarcopenia, also contributes to gradual loss of muscle mass and strength. Neurogenic atrophy occurs when nerve supply to a tissue is damaged, leading to rapid size reduction of the affected muscles. Other factors include malnutrition, chronic diseases (such as systemic inflammatory or organ failures), ischemia, and hormonal disturbances. At the cellular level, surkastumia involves reduced protein synthesis and increased protein breakdown, often through pathways such as the ubiquitin–proteasome system and autophagy.

Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment supported by imaging and functional tests. Imaging methods like ultrasound, MRI, or CT can quantify tissue size, while strength and mobility tests gauge functional impact. The underlying cause is identified through medical history, examination, and targeted investigations.

Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause and preserving function. Strategies include physical therapy and resistance exercise to stimulate hypertrophy, nutritional optimization, management of chronic illnesses, and, when possible, restoration of nerve supply or vascular function.
