Superkapacitátorokban, also known as ultracapacitors or electrochemical capacitors, are energy storage devices that bridge the gap between conventional capacitors and rechargeable batteries. Unlike batteries that store energy through chemical reactions, supercapacitors store energy electrostatically by accumulating ions on the surface of an electrode material. This electrostatic storage mechanism allows for much faster charging and discharging rates compared to batteries.

The fundamental principle behind supercapacitors involves a large surface area of electrode material and a very thin layer of electrolyte separating the electrodes. When a voltage is applied, ions from the electrolyte migrate to the surface of the oppositely charged electrodes, forming an electrical double layer. This double layer acts as the charge storage mechanism. The extremely high surface area, often achieved using porous carbon materials like activated carbon or graphene, is crucial for achieving high capacitance values.

Supercapacitors offer advantages such as long cycle life, meaning they can be charged and discharged hundreds of thousands of times without significant degradation. They also operate efficiently over a wide temperature range and are generally considered safer than batteries due to the absence of exothermic chemical reactions. However, their energy density, the amount of energy stored per unit volume or mass, is typically lower than that of batteries, making them more suitable for applications requiring rapid bursts of power rather than long-term energy storage. Applications include regenerative braking in vehicles, backup power for electronic devices, and smoothing power fluctuations in renewable energy systems.
