Suistoalueet, known in English as estuary areas, are coastal transition zones where freshwater from rivers mixes with seawater. They are typically shallow, sediment-rich environments with strong gradients in salinity, nutrients, and sediment load. The energy and chemistry of estuaries are controlled by the interaction of river discharge, tidal action, wind, and wave processes, which continually shape channels, mudflats, and floodplains.

Estuaries form where rivers meet the coast, resulting in deposition that creates deltas, tidal flats, and networked channel systems. The mixing of fresh and saltwater creates unique chemical zones—from fresh to brackish to briny—supporting diverse habitats. Common vegetation includes salt-tolerant plants such as reeds, marshes, and in certain climates mangroves, while the water column can host abundant plankton, fish larvae, and invertebrates. Estuaries typically function as high-productivity systems and important nurseries for many marine and coastal species.

Estuary ecosystems provide key services: they filter pollutants and sediments, protect coastlines from erosion, support fisheries and recreation, and store carbon in sediments. Their biodiversity is high, with specialized birds, fish, and invertebrates adapted to fluctuating salinity and tides.

Human activities influence suistoalueet through land use, pollution, overfishing, dredging, and development. Management approaches emphasize integrated coastal zone planning, habitat restoration, water quality control, and monitoring to maintain ecological integrity and the long-term provisioning of ecosystem services. In regions such as Finland and the Baltic Sea area, estuary health is closely linked to watershed management and efforts to curb eutrophication and habitat loss.
