Subpuzzles are puzzle elements embedded within a larger puzzle, such as a puzzle hunt or multi-stage challenge. Each subpuzzle is designed to be solved on its own, but its solution feeds into a broader meta-puzzle that determines the final answer or outcome. The term distinguishes these components from the overarching meta and from standalone puzzles.

In structure, a subpuzzle presents its own prompt, clues, and mechanics, and yields a discrete result such as a word, number, or code. That result is then used in the meta stage, often as a letter, a position indicator, or a key to unlock the next step. Subpuzzles can employ a wide range of formats, including cryptography, wordplay, logic grids, trivia, image or audio puzzles, and mapping or pattern-recognition tasks.

Design goals for subpuzzles include solvability, fairness, and variety. They should be sufficiently self-contained to be approachable without excessive external knowledge, while still aligning with the hunt’s theme. The extraction method should be clear enough that solvers can determine how to use the solution in the meta, without requiring guesswork.

In practice, subpuzzles balance multiple factors: diverse techniques to engage different skill sets, consistent labeling and input formats, and a coherent overall pacing.
