Guesswork is the process of forming conclusions or choices based on incomplete or insufficient information, often relying on intuition, guess, or rules of thumb rather than systematic evidence. It arises in situations where data are sparse, time is limited, or outcomes are uncertain. In everyday use, people may guess numbers, dates, or outcomes of events; in professional settings, experts may make preliminary assessments or conjectures that later require testing.

In statistics and science, guesswork is contrasted with evidence-based inference. Formal methods such as estimation, hypothesis testing, and probabilistic modeling aim to quantify uncertainty and reduce dependence on arbitrary guesses. When information is incomplete, probability theory provides a framework to express uncertainty and update beliefs as new data arrive, including approaches such as Bayesian inference. Even so, early stages of inquiry often involve guesswork to guide data collection or model construction.

Limitations of guesswork include bias, overconfidence, and a tendency to rely on salient or recent information rather than representative data. The accuracy of guesses improves with access to relevant information, explicit uncertainty assessments, calibration, and structured decision processes such as forecasting protocols or decision analysis.
