A sublayer is a layer that exists beneath another layer within a layered architecture, providing a more specialized or lower-level set of services. Sublayers help organize complex systems by separating concerns, enabling modular development, and allowing independent evolution of individual components.

In the field of communications and computer networking, the term is commonly used to describe divisions within a single layer of the OSI model. The data link layer is typically subdivided into two sublayers: the MAC (Media Access Control) sublayer and the LLC (Logical Link Control) sublayer. The MAC sublayer handles hardware addressing and access to the physical transmission medium, including mechanisms for coordinating when devices can transmit. The LLC sublayer interfaces with the network layer above, offering a more abstract service interface, supporting multiplexing of multiple network-layer protocols, and providing basic error and flow control facilities, while relying on the MAC sublayer for the actual transmission of frames.

Beyond networking, the concept of a sublayer appears in various domains where a layer is further partitioned to improve manageability. In software, graphics, and document workflows, layers may be organized into sublayers to structure content and behavior more precisely.
