It comprises the lower subcanopy and the immediate understory vegetation and microhabitats that persist under dense shade. The concept is sometimes used to distinguish this specific shade-connected zone from the taller canopy and from the ground layer, though its boundaries vary among studies.

Etymology and usage: the word combines sub-, meaning under, with arbore, from Latin arbor, tree. In practice, subarbore is not universally standardized and may overlap with established terms such as understory, subcanopy, or shrub layer. Some ecologists treat subarbore as a distinct sublayer emphasizing both plant and animal communities that inhabit the shaded zone beneath mature tree crowns.

Habitat and structure: the subarbore experiences reduced light, buffered temperature fluctuations, and higher humidity compared with open areas. Leaf litter, fallen branches, and the upper soil horizon contribute to a complex microhabitat. Vegetation in this zone tends to be shade-tolerant and often slow-growing, with many species persisting as adults under continued canopy cover.

Flora and fauna: typical components include shade-tolerant herbs, ferns, mosses and lichens, as well as shrubs and saplings in the lower subcanopy.
