A typical setup includes separate live rooms and a control room, with acoustic treatment to reduce reflections and leakage between spaces. Engineers manage the signal chain from microphones to monitors, using equipment such as microphones (dynamic, condenser, ribbon), preamps, audio interfaces, digital audio workstations, mixing consoles, headphones, and studio monitors, sometimes complemented by outboard gear like compressors and equalizers.

The workflow generally comprises planning and setup, tracking, editing, mixing, and mastering. During setup, choices are made about microphone types and placements, room calibration, and routing of signals. Tracking involves recording performances, often across multiple takes and with overdubs. Post-tracking editing may include comping the best takes, timing corrections, and noise reduction. Mixing balances levels, applies equalization, dynamics processing, reverbs and other effects, and creates stems for mastering. Mastering ensures consistent loudness and tonal cohesion for distribution.
