A studbutton is a type of fastener used in sewing and garment construction. It consists of a male stud that passes through fabric and a corresponding female backing, cap, or socket that secures the two pieces in place. Studbuttons are designed to be removable or reusable and can function as closures or decorative hardware. They are commonly used on denim and Western-style garments, lightweight jackets, children's clothing, and some upholstery applications. They differ from conventional sew-on buttons because they require a mating piece to hold the fabric together, often providing a flatter, more durable closure.

Construction and variants: Studbuttons are typically made of metal or plastic. The stud may be attached by stitching, rivet, or a threaded shank, while the backing piece is applied on the opposite fabric surface by crimping, pressing, or sewing. Some designs use a snap-like mechanism, while formalwear uses shirt studs that pass through buttonholes and are secured by decorative stoppers.
