Strykeinstrumenter, also known as string instruments, are musical instruments that produce sound by means of vibrating strings. The vibration of these strings can be initiated in several ways, including bowing, plucking, or striking. The resulting vibrations are then typically amplified by a resonant body, such as the hollow body of a guitar or violin.

The fundamental principle behind all string instruments is that the pitch of the sound produced is determined by several factors: the length of the string, its tension, and its mass per unit length (or thickness). Shorter, tighter, or thinner strings generally produce higher pitches, while longer, looser, or thicker strings produce lower pitches.

Common examples of bowed string instruments include the violin, viola, cello, and double bass, which are staples of orchestras and chamber music. Plucked string instruments encompass a wide variety, such as guitars, harps, pianos (which use hammers to strike the strings, but are often categorized with plucked instruments due to the string vibration), and lutes. Other instruments, like the dulcimer, are struck, using small hammers to directly hit the strings. The diversity of string instruments reflects a long history of innovation and cultural adaptation across the globe, each offering unique tonal qualities and playing techniques.
