A steriliser is a device or process used to render equipment or materials sterile, meaning free from viable microorganisms. In medical, laboratory, and food settings, sterilisation is intended to achieve a state of sterility that supports patient safety, product integrity, and regulatory compliance. Sterilisation is distinct from disinfection or sanitisation, which reduce microbial populations but do not guarantee complete sterility.

Sterilisation methods fall into several broad categories. Moist heat sterilisation uses pressurized steam (typical in autoclaves) to kill microorganisms by protein coagulation and enzyme inactivation. Dry heat sterilisation relies on hot air at higher temperatures and longer times. Chemical sterilisation employs gaseous or liquid sterilants, such as ethylene oxide or hydrogen peroxide-based systems, suitable for heat‑sensitive instruments. Radiation sterilisation uses gamma rays, electron beams, or X-rays to destroy microorganisms, often for single-use medical devices or pharmaceuticals. Filtration can sterilise liquids or gases by removing microorganisms through specialized membranes, used when heat cannot be applied.

Common applications include hospitals, clinics, laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and food and beverage packaging. Domestic sterilisation devices, such as bottle sterilizers and steam-based home cleaners, provide post-pasteurisation sanitation for household items.

Validation and monitoring are essential to ensure effectiveness. This typically involves biological indicators, physical and chemical indicators, and adherence to recognised standards and guidance published by regulatory authorities and standards organisations.
