Unlike alloy wheels, which are often made from aluminum or magnesium alloys, steelies are known for their durability and lower cost.

The design of steelies is generally simple, often featuring a basic rim with multiple circular openings. These openings serve a dual purpose: they help to reduce the overall weight of the wheel and also aid in the dissipation of heat generated by the braking system. While visually less complex than many alloy wheel designs, steelies are robust and can withstand significant impact.

They are less prone to cracking or shattering upon impact compared to some alloy wheels. In many cases, steelies are intended to be covered by a plastic or metal hubcap, which can provide a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
