Hubcap, or wheel cover in some regions, is a circular disk designed to fit over a vehicle’s wheel hub. Its main purposes are decorative enhancement and protection for the wheel hub and lug nuts from dirt, moisture, and corrosion. Hubcaps can be made from metal (often chrome-plated steel) or plastic and come in a range of finishes, including polished chrome and painted surfaces. They are sized to match specific wheel diameters, commonly 14 to 18 inches.

Attachment methods vary. Some hubcaps snap on with spring clips or a retaining ring behind the wheel, while others are secured with screws or bolts. In some designs, a center cap remains separate from an outer wheel cover that forms part of the styling.

Distinction: the term hubcap is sometimes used to describe a metal disk that covers the wheel hub on steel wheels, whereas wheel cover can refer to a plastic disc that covers the entire wheel. In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably.

History and usage: Hubcaps gained popularity in the early 20th century with steel wheels as a decorative and protective feature. With the rise of alloy wheels, the use of traditional hubcaps declined in some markets, but both OEM and aftermarket hubcaps and wheel covers remain common.

Maintenance: Hubcaps can be cleaned with mild soap and water. If damaged or loose, they should be replaced to preserve appearance and protection.
