The concept emerged during the early 20th century in German industrial engineering, when workplace safety regulations began to mandate the reduction of fine particulate matter in factories, mines, and processing plants. Early forms of the staubbedingter device consisted of simple mechanical or electrostatic separators that attracted dust to a fixed surface, thereby reducing airborne concentrations.
