Accreditation and quality programs assess safety, patient outcomes, and service standards, and may be overseen by national regulatory bodies or external accrediting organizations.

History and evolution show that hospitals arose from charitable and religious care facilities and transformed into modern medical centers with advances in anesthesia, antisepsis, germ theory, and organized clinical practice during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Contemporary challenges include rising costs, staffing shortages, aging populations, and the integration of electronic medical records and telemedicine. Hospitals also focus on patient safety, data privacy, surge capacity, and value-based care within broader health systems.
