Stationary storage, or stationary energy storage, refers to systems installed at fixed locations to store electrical energy for later use. They are deployed in power plants, substations, commercial facilities, and other sites to support the grid or on-site loads, and are not intended to be moved. Technologies vary by chemistry, capacity, and application. The most common form is battery energy storage systems (BESS), typically based on lithium‑ion or flow batteries, which can rapidly charge and discharge with high round‑trip efficiency. Other mature options include pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES), and thermal energy storage using materials such as molten salt or chilled water. Flywheels and power-to-gas/hydrogen systems provide additional roles in specific contexts.

A stationary storage installation comprises energy storage hardware, power conversion equipment (inverters or converters), thermal management, protection systems, and an integration layer such as an energy management system (EMS). The system is designed to deliver services like frequency regulation, peak shaving, energy arbitrage, and backup power, often through software-controlled dispatch.

Benefits include improved grid reliability, enhanced integration of intermittent renewables, utilization of otherwise curtailed energy, and reduced peak demand charges for facilities. Costs have fallen for some technologies, particularly lithium‑ion batteries, but lifetime, safety, and environmental considerations continue to influence project economics and permitting.

Market development is influenced by policy support, market design, and utility requirements. Key challenges include capital costs, degradation and recycling of storage media, safety risks such as thermal runaway in batteries, and the need for appropriate permitting and siting.
