StandardIA is an international standard for the interoperability, safety, and governance of artificial intelligence systems. It defines common interfaces, evaluation criteria, and documentation to enable vendors and organizations to integrate AI components from different sources while maintaining safety and accountability. The goal is to reduce fragmentation in AI deployments and improve reproducibility and trust.

The standard covers several domains: technical interfaces and data schemas, model documentation and cards, measurement and benchmarking frameworks, risk assessment processes, privacy and data protection controls, and provenance and audit trails. It specifies machine-readable API contracts, standardized data formats, and versioning rules to enable end-to-end interoperability across platforms.

Developed by the International Standards Alliance for AI (ISAA) and supported by national standards bodies, StandardIA began as a collaborative initiative in the early 2020s and underwent multiple public drafts before stabilization. The governance structure includes a Steering Council, working groups on interoperability, ethics, and security, and a certification program to verify conformance.

Adoption has been gradual, with pilot implementations in finance, healthcare, and industrial automation. Proponents argue it reduces vendor lock-in and promotes safety testing, while critics note the breadth of AI applications makes comprehensive conformance challenging. Ongoing updates address evolving capabilities and regulatory developments.

StandardIA is designed to align with broader AI governance and data standards, encouraging compatibility with ISO, national guidelines, and privacy rules. It serves as a reference point for organizations seeking consistent interoperability while accommodating domain-specific extensions.
