Spjeldventiler, also known as butterfly valves, are a type of quarter-turn valve used to regulate or isolate flow in a pipeline. They consist of a disc mounted on a rod, which is positioned in the center of the pipe. Rotating the rod by 90 degrees, either clockwise or counter-clockwise, moves the disc from a fully open to a fully closed position or vice versa. When the disc is parallel to the flow, it is open, and when it is perpendicular, it is closed.

The operation of a spjeldventil is simple and effective. In the fully open position, the disc is rotated out of the flow path, offering minimal resistance to flow. As the disc is rotated towards the closed position, it obstructs the flow path, progressively reducing the flow rate. In the fully closed position, the disc forms a seal against the valve seat, preventing fluid passage.

Spjeldventiler are known for their compact size, light weight, and relatively low cost, making them a popular choice in various industries. They are commonly used in applications such as water distribution, wastewater treatment, chemical processing, and HVAC systems. Their quick operation, requiring only a quarter turn from fully open to fully closed, is another advantage. However, they are generally not recommended for applications requiring precise throttling or where complete tight shut-off is critical, as some leakage can occur even in the closed position.
