Soltimer is a term used to describe devices or systems that derive or regulate time from solar cues rather than conventional clock signals. In its broadest sense, a soltimer can be any instrument that aligns timekeeping with the Sun’s position or with daylight cycles, rather than with a fixed rhythm of seconds and minutes produced by a crystal oscillator or network time protocol. Soltimers may range from ancient sundials to modern digital systems that compute solar time and adjust displays or actions accordingly.

Mechanisms and implementations commonly involve measuring the sun’s azimuth and elevation and applying corrections for the observer’s longitude, date, and the equation of time. Sundials are the classic example, reading solar time directly from the position of shadows. More advanced soltimers use sensors and algorithms to determine solar noon, sunrise and sunset, or specific solar angles, and then trigger events or feed a solar-time display. Some systems explicitly convert clock time to solar time for user interfaces or for synchronization with solar phenomena.

Applications of soltimers cover a variety of fields. They appear in outdoor timekeeping devices, solar-based irrigation controllers, lighting and shading automation, and architectural systems that optimize passive solar performance. In education and public art, soltimers can illustrate the relationship between time, location, and the Sun. Limitations include weather dependence, geographic specificity, and reduced precision compared to modern atomic time standards; solar time can vary with season and latitude, making universal, second-level accuracy impractical without supplementary timing references.
