Snargar is a small, semi-aquatic mammal-like species described in the fauna of freshwater wetlands in the fictional region of Valoria. It is commonly associated with reedbeds and marsh margins, where it forages primarily at night. The name is borrowed from the local Sendar language, translating roughly as “water wanderer,” and has been used in both field reports and local folklore.

Description and morphology: An adult snargar typically measures 25 to 35 centimeters in body length, with a 12 to 18 centimeter tail. It has dense, water-repellent fur, a broad, flattened snout, and webbed hind feet that aid in swimming. Colouration varies from olive to brown, providing camouflage among aquatic vegetation. Sensory whiskers and keen hearing complement its reliance on scent and movement to locate prey.

Behavior and ecology: Snargars are mainly nocturnal and occur in small family groups or alone. They construct dome-shaped nests from reeds, grasses, and mud near the water’s edge. Their diet comprises aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fish, and some plant material. They communicate with chirps and squeaks that can travel across wetlands, and use scent marking to define territory and family boundaries. Predators include larger birds, foxes, and occasionally feral canids.

Life cycle and reproduction: Breeding occurs in the spring, with litters of two to four offspring. Pups are born blind and rely on maternal care for several weeks before beginning to forage. Juveniles reach independence within a few months and reach reproductive maturity in the following year.

Conservation and human relevance: Snargars are not widely kept in captivity and are generally considered of minor economic importance. They are valued in some locales for ecological roles, such as insect control and as indicators of wetland health. Current assessments typically categorize the species as of Least Concern, though habitat loss from drainage and development can impact local populations.
