Smygjakt, literally "sneak hunting," is a hunting method practiced in Norway, Sweden and other Nordic countries that emphasizes stealth and close approach to game. Rather than relying on blinds, drives, or high-volume pursuit, the hunter moves slowly through terrain to remain unseen by the quarry, with the aim of reaching shooting distance under favorable wind conditions.

Technique and discipline play central roles. Practitioners study animal behavior, track and sign, and the lay of the land to exploit cover and terrain features. Movement is quiet and deliberate, breaths are controlled, and scent management is important. Camouflage and staying downwind of the animal are common strategies, while observers may monitor from concealment to signal when a safe shot presents itself.

Common targets include deer species such as roe deer and red deer, as well as other game allowed by local regulations, including moose or wild boar in some areas. Weapons typically include rifles, shotguns, or bows, with emphasis on ethical shot placement and humane outcomes. Shooting distances tend to be shorter than in other hunting styles, varying with weapon, terrain, and visibility.

Regulatory and ethical considerations are important. Laws governing seasons, licensing, safe firearm handling, and identification of targets differ by country and region, and must be followed. Smygjakt requires patience, skill, and respect for game welfare, and is often regarded as a traditional form of fair-chase hunting that tests the hunter’s proximity skills and knowledge of the environment.
