Smalldeflection is a term used to describe a regime in which the bending or angular deviation of a particle, ray, or signal from its original trajectory is small enough to be treated with linearized methods. In this regime, the path can be approximated as essentially straight, with only a small cumulative angular deviation that permits perturbative or diffusive modeling.

The concept arises in contexts where scattering or refraction imparts only tiny angles per interaction, or where many weak interactions accumulate to produce a measurable but limited deflection. It is applied across disciplines such as optical and atmospheric sciences, medical imaging, neutron and charged-particle transport, and computer graphics, where simplifying assumptions reduce computational complexity while preserving essential transport behavior.

Mathematically, smalldeflection relies on the condition |theta| << 1 radian, enabling first-order or linearized treatments. The transverse displacement along a path can be described by small-angle approximations, and the cumulative deflection is often represented through integrals of scattering power or as a Gaussian-like random process in multiple-scattering theories. In some applications, the eikonal or diffusion approximations provide tractable models under this regime.

Applications include efficient ray tracing through participating media with gradual refractive effects, light propagation in atmospheric or tissue-like environments, and diffusion approximations in nuclear or particle transport. The approach is particularly useful when large-angle events are rare or can be neglected, and when a fast, approximate description suffices.
