Skivbromser are a type of braking system that uses a rotor (disc) attached to the wheel and calipers that squeeze brake pads against the rotor to slow or stop rotation. They are used in automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, and in some aircraft and industrial machinery.

The braking action is produced when force is transmitted from the brake lever or pedal to the caliper, either hydraulically or mechanically. In hydraulic systems, pressurized fluid actuates pistons inside the caliper, pushing the pads against the rotor. The friction between the pads and rotor converts kinetic energy into heat, which is dissipated by the rotor and surrounding air. Some systems employ electrical sensors and are integrated with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic stability controls to prevent wheel lockup and improve control during hard braking.

Rotors come in various shapes and materials, commonly cast iron, steel, or composite materials for high-performance applications. Calipers can be floating or fixed in design, and pads vary in material composition (such as organic, semi-metallic, or ceramic), affecting wear, heat tolerance, and braking feel.

Advantages of skivbromser include strong stopping power, good heat dissipation, and reliable performance in wet conditions. They are widely adopted for front and rear wheels on modern cars and motorcycles and are increasingly common on bicycles, particularly mountain bikes and high-end road bikes. Disadvantages include higher cost, greater mechanical complexity, and the need for compatible wheels, rotors, and maintenance to prevent pitting, uneven wear, or rotor warping. Regular inspection and replacement of pads and rotors are essential for safe operation.
