Sixcylinder refers to engines that have six cylinders to house pistons, producing power through combustion. They are most commonly built in three layouts: inline-six (I6), V6, and flat-six (boxer). In an inline-six, all six cylinders are arranged in a single straight row. A V6 uses two banks of three cylinders arranged at an angle, while a flat-six places three cylinders on each side in a horizontally opposed layout. Each configuration offers different characteristics in balance, size, and packaging.

The inline-six is valued for smooth operation and excellent balance, but it tends to be longer, which can complicate front-end design in some vehicles. The V6 is compact and versatile, widely used in modern cars and SUVs, and can be naturally aspirated or turbocharged to boost power. The flat-six provides very smooth running and a low center of gravity, preferred in certain sports cars and air-cooled designs, though it requires wider engine bays.

Advances such as turbocharging and direct injection have enabled smaller displacement six-cylinders to deliver strong torque and efficiency.
