Sivuviivat, literally “margin lines” in Finnish, are the visual guides that mark the boundaries of a page’s usable area in printed documents, publications, and digital layouts. They indicate where text, images, and other content should be placed to avoid running too close to the edge of the page where binding, trimming, or softness of the paper could obscure the information. Sivuviivat are typically invisible in the final printed product; they are a design tool used during the composition and layout process to maintain consistent margins and improve readability.

The concept of sivuviivat dates back to early typesetting when page-wide measurements were essential for accurate punch-cards and metal type blocks.
