Sisätilalokalisaatio, known in English as indoor localization, refers to the process of determining the precise position of an object or person within an enclosed space, such as a building. Unlike outdoor localization, which often relies on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, indoor environments present challenges such as signal obstruction and multipath interference. Therefore, various alternative technologies are employed.

Common techniques for sisätilalokalisaatio include using radio frequency-based methods like Wi-Fi fingerprinting, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) systems. Wi-Fi fingerprinting involves creating a map of Wi-Fi signal strengths at different locations and then comparing real-time measurements to this map to estimate position. BLE beacons emit signals that mobile devices can detect, allowing for triangulation or proximity-based positioning. UWB offers high accuracy by measuring the time of flight of radio pulses between devices.

Other methods encompass sensor-based approaches such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) in smartphones, which track movement and changes in orientation. Magnetic field localization, which utilizes variations in the Earth's magnetic field or artificial magnetic anomalies, is also a viable option. Sometimes, a hybrid approach combining multiple technologies is used to achieve greater accuracy and robustness, overcoming the limitations of any single method.
