A sinecure is a position or office that requires little or no work but provides a salary or other benefits. The term derives from the Latin "sine cura," meaning "without care." Historically, sinecures were often granted by patrons to individuals as a form of reward or patronage, without regard to the actual duties associated with the position.

The nature of sinecures has evolved over time. In medieval and early modern periods, they were common in church and state institutions. For example, a canonry in a cathedral might come with a stipend and no pastoral duties. Similarly, government posts could be created and filled by individuals who performed no actual service.

The perception of sinecures can vary, with some viewing them as an inefficient allocation of resources and others as a necessary, albeit sometimes flawed, system of patronage.

In modern contexts, the term sinecure is generally used pejoratively, implying a job that is unnecessary and exists solely to benefit the holder. Many modern organizations and governments have made efforts to eliminate or reform positions that are perceived as sinecures to ensure that public funds and resources are utilized effectively and for actual work performed.
