Apes are not monkeys; they are part of the superfamily Hominoidea within Catarrhini and include gibbons (lesser apes) and the great apes (orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees) as well as humans.

Examples of monkeys include capuchins and howler monkeys (New World), baboons and macaques (Old World). Apes include chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and humans. The broader simian group covers a wide range of body sizes, social systems, and habitats, from tropical forests to savannas. Most simians are diurnal and arboreal, though there is substantial variation in diet, locomotion, and social structure.
