Silvergilt refers to an object made of silver that has been gilded with a thin layer of gold. This process, also known as "gilding," is used to enhance the appearance of the silver object, giving it the lustrous look of solid gold while retaining the strength and durability of silver. The application of gold can be done through various methods, historically including mercury gilding, where gold amalgam was applied and then heated to vaporize the mercury, leaving the gold behind, or mechanical gilding, where gold leaf was applied and burnished.

The practice of silvergilding dates back to antiquity and was particularly popular during periods such as the Renaissance and Baroque eras. It was often employed in the creation of elaborate tableware, religious artifacts, and decorative items. The contrast between the gold and silver surfaces could also be used to create decorative patterns. Over time, the gold layer can wear away or become tarnished, revealing the silver underneath, a process that can sometimes add to the antique character of an object. Modern techniques for silvergilding also exist, utilizing electroplating for a more durable and uniform gold coating.
