Silvergilding is a decorative technique that involves applying a thin layer of silver to a gilded surface. This process results in a lustrous, silvery finish that can be further enhanced with patination to achieve various aged or colored effects. While gilding traditionally refers to the application of gold, silvergilding specifically utilizes silver leaf or silver powder.

The application of silver follows similar principles to gold leaf application. Silver leaf, extremely thin sheets of pure silver, is adhered to a prepared surface using various adhesives, such as mordant or water gilding. Alternatively, silver powder mixed with a binder can be applied as a paint. Once the silver layer is applied and the adhesive is dry, the surface can be burnished to a high shine or treated with chemicals to create patinas, which mimic the look of aged silver or introduce other colors.

Silvergilding is employed on a variety of objects, including furniture, picture frames, architectural elements, and decorative arts. It offers a distinctive aesthetic, providing a bright, reflective surface that can be more subtle or pronounced than traditional gilding depending on the desired patina.
