siltsten
Siltsten, or siltstone, is a clastic sedimentary rock composed primarily of silt-sized grains. Silt-sized particles range roughly from 4 to 62 micrometers in diameter, placing siltstone between sandstone and mudstone in grain size. Most siltstones are made up of quartz, with varying amounts of feldspar and lithic fragments, and they are commonly cemented by silica or carbonate minerals. The mineral composition and cementation give the rock a relatively hard, dense feel compared with mudstone.
In hand specimen the grains are often not visible to the naked eye, and the rock typically
Diagenesis plays a key role in forming siltstone, with compaction and cementation binding the grains. The cement
Compared with sandstone and mudstone, siltstone represents an intermediate grain size: finer than sandstone and coarser
