Deepwater describes ocean waters beyond the continental shelf where depth increases rapidly. In offshore industry contexts, deepwater is commonly defined as water depths exceeding 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet). Some classifications distinguish ultradeepwater, typically depths beyond 2,000 meters (about 6,560 feet).

Oceanographically, deepwater spans the bathyal and deeper zones, where light is limited, temperatures are low, and pressures are high. Conditions vary with location but generally feature cold, nutrient-rich environments that support specialized life forms and slow biogeochemical processes.

Economically, deepwater has been central to modern offshore oil and gas development. It requires advanced floating platforms, such as drillships and semi-submersibles, dynamic positioning, subsea production systems, and long steel risers. The Deepwater Horizon accident in 2010 underscored safety and environmental risks and prompted stricter regulation and industry improvements.

Environmental considerations include vulnerability to spills, as well as the sensitivity of deepwater ecosystems to disturbance. Deepwater habitats host organisms adapted to high pressure and low light, including cold-water corals, amphipods, and unique microbial communities associated with chemosynthesis at hydrocarbon seeps.

Global activity concentrates in regions such as the Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Brazil, the North Sea, and parts of the Asia-Pacific. Ongoing technological advances in subsea processing, extended-reach drilling, and autonomous control continue to expand potential reserves in deepwater, influencing energy supply and geopolitics.
