Signaliseerimist refers to the installation and maintenance of traffic signals, which are devices used to regulate the flow of traffic at intersections and other points of high traffic density. These devices may be wholly mechanical, wholly electronic, or a combination of both.

In traditional mechanical signal systems, a sequence of fixed or adjustable mechanical stages carries out the

functions necessary for making a signal or clearing an intersection. These signals can be colour-coded, with red and green colours indicating when drivers should stop and go, respectively. Three-colour traffic signal systems may also use yellow signals to warn drivers of an impending change.

In modern electronic signal systems, semaphores and light signals are used instead of or alongside mechanical stages. Electronic signals are often managed by computerized control systems, which allow for more complex and customizable signal patterns. Electronic systems reduce the wear and tear on mechanical components and improve responsiveness to changing traffic conditions.

The design and placement of traffic signals, as well as their timing parameters, must be carefully planned to ensure road safety while minimizing congestion and reducing traffic emissions. Because of the significant role they play in high-traffic areas, it is up to traffic engineers to study and revise signal systems.
