Siegecraft is the discipline of planning, executing, and defending sieges, including the use of engineering works, logistics, and tactical maneuvers to compel the surrender of fortified positions. It covers the allocation of forces, provisioning, and the construction of siege works such as trenches, saps, ramps, breaching batteries, siege towers, and artillery batteries, as well as measures for blockading, reconnaissance, and relief operations. The objective is to breach defenses, a fortification’s lines of communication, or to compel surrender through attrition, starvation, or psychological pressure.

Historically, siegecraft has evolved with weaponry and fortifications. In antiquity, artillery emerged with battering rams, towers, and early siege engines like catapults, progressing to Roman circumvallation methods and Chinese siege techniques. In the Middle Ages, heavy siege engines such as trebuchets and mangonels, combined with mining and sapping, enabled breaches of medieval walls; fortifications began to adapt with concentric layouts and later star forts. The gunpowder era transformed siegecraft: cannons and mortars could breach thick walls, prompting new fortification designs and siege tactics, including field works and artillery-intensive assaults. In the early modern period, engineers such as Vauban refined siege methodology, emphasizing disciplined logistics, targeted breaches, and defensive fortifications.

In modern warfare, siegecraft focuses on long-range artillery, aerial bombardment, rapid breaching, and continuous encirclement, with an emphasis on logistics and maintenance of besieger and besieged forces. It remains a specialized branch within military engineering and civil defense study, influencing fortification design and urban planning. Historical analyses of siegecraft illuminate how control of infrastructure, supply lines, and terrain determines the outcome of conflicts as much as battlefield engagements.
