Shorthaired is an adjective used to describe animals whose coats consist of short, dense hairs that lie close to the skin. It is used across species such as cats, dogs, and rabbits, and is contrasted with longhaired or medium-haired varieties. The term is descriptive, not taxonomic.

In cats, shorthaired types include domestic shorthaired cats, a broad category encompassing many non-pedigreed individuals, as well as several pedigreed breeds with short coats, such as the British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Russian Blue, and Chartreux. Shorthaired cats generally require less grooming than longhaired cats, but they still shed and benefit from regular brushing.

In dogs and other mammals, shorthaired individuals appear in many breeds and non-pedigreed pets. Short coats typically shed year-round with seasonal increases. Grooming needs are usually lighter than for longhaired dogs but vary by breed and activity. Shorthaired rabbits likewise have dense, short fur that requires routine brushing to remove loose hair.

Genetics and variation: Coat length results from multiple genetic factors and is influenced by environment and selection. The shorthaired phenotype is common in domestic populations and has been maintained by breeders and owners seeking lower maintenance or particular appearances.
