Chartreux

The Chartreux is a medium- to large-sized domestic cat breed originating in France. It is best known for its dense, woolly blue-gray coat, copper or gold eyes, and a sturdy, muscular frame. The breed’s plush double coat and rounded head give it a distinctive, teddy-bear appearance.

Origins of the Chartreux are not completely clear, but the breed has a long history in France and is often linked to the Carthusian monks of the Chartreuse order. It appears in French historical records from the 18th and 19th centuries and is considered one of the oldest French cat breeds.

Temperament is typically calm, quiet, and affectionate. Chartreux commonly form strong bonds with their families, are good with children and other pets, and are known for their intelligence. They can be reserved with strangers but are not generally aggressive or overly vocal.

Care requirements focus on coat maintenance and overall well-being. The coat should be brushed regularly to manage shedding, with more frequent grooming during seasonal shedding periods. They are generally easygoing in terms of upkeep and do not require frequent bathing.

Health and life expectancy for Chartreux cats are typically favorable. They commonly live about 12 to 15 years. Like many purebred cats, responsible breeders screen for health issues and provide guidance on nutrition, exercise, and routine veterinary care to support long, healthy lives.
