Settingen is a Dutch term that can refer to configuration options or parameters used to tailor software, devices, or media. In standard Dutch, the common translation is instellingen; settingen is encountered mainly as an anglicism or in bilingual or informal writing.

In computing and digital contexts, a setting denotes a specific option that affects how a program or device behaves, such as display brightness, language, privacy preferences, or notification rules. Settings are typically organized into menus or panels within a user interface, and changes may take effect immediately or after confirmation.

Etymology and usage: The noun setting comes from English; the usual Dutch equivalent is instelling (plural instellingen). Because many software interfaces originate in English, you may encounter the form settingen in documentation, labels, or among speakers who prefer English terminology. In formal Dutch writing, voorkeuren, configuratie, or instellingen are more common than settingen.

Other uses: In literature or film, the term setting can describe the time and place of a narrative. Dutch translations usually render this as tijd en plaats van het verhaal, though some bilingual texts may retain the English word setting.
