Note: sensorsusually is not a standard term in sensor technology. In this article, it is used to denote the typical sensors employed in sensing systems to measure physical quantities. The term can describe conventional devices found in many applications, as opposed to specialized or experimental sensors.

Typical sensors measure quantities such as temperature, pressure, humidity, light, motion, chemical composition, magnetic fields, or acoustic signals. They operate on various transduction principles, including thermal (thermistor, RTD), piezoelectric, capacitive, optical, inductive, resistive, and chemical reactions. They are broadly categorized into contact sensors, which require a physical interface with the measurand, and non-contact sensors, which infer properties from distance, radiation, or fields. Outputs are commonly analog voltages or currents, or digital data delivered over interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, 4-20 mA, or wireless links.

Designers evaluate sensors on sensitivity, accuracy, resolution, dynamic range, response time, linearity, hysteresis, noise, drift, and environmental tolerance. Practical considerations include power consumption, size, cost, and required calibration. Sensor systems often incorporate signal conditioning, amplification, and filtering, and may use sensor fusion or data-processing algorithms to improve reliability.

Common applications span consumer electronics, automotive and industrial automation, environmental monitoring, medical devices, and robotics. The emergence of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and advanced materials has reduced size and cost while expanding capabilities. The field continues to emphasize reliability testing and calibration protocols to maintain performance over time.
