A senseresistor, also known as a strain gauge, is a sensor whose electrical resistance varies with applied mechanical strain. It is a type of transducer that converts an applied mechanical strain into a change in electrical resistance. This change in resistance is typically very small. Senseresistors are commonly used in various applications to measure force, pressure, weight, and displacement.

The basic principle behind a senseresistor relies on the piezoresistive effect. This effect describes the change in electrical resistivity of a conductor or semiconductor when mechanical strain is applied. The most common type of senseresistor is made of a thin metallic foil arranged in a grid pattern. This grid is bonded to a flexible backing material. When the backing material is stretched or compressed, the metallic grid deforms along with it. This deformation changes the length and cross-sectional area of the conductive elements, thereby altering their electrical resistance.

Senseresistors are often used in Wheatstone bridge circuits to amplify the small resistance changes into a measurable voltage output. In a typical setup, two or more senseresistors are incorporated into the bridge. When strain is applied to the object being measured, the resistance of the senseresistors changes, causing an imbalance in the bridge and producing a voltage signal proportional to the applied strain. This signal can then be processed and displayed by appropriate instrumentation. Their sensitivity, small size, and relatively low cost make them versatile components in many sensing applications.
