In statistics and national accounts, sectors are defined by standardized classifications (for example ISIC, NACE, or NAICS), which allow the calculation of sector shares of GDP, employment, output, and productivity. Data gathered at the sektorniveau can be sourced from national statistics offices, Eurostat, the OECD, and related agencies. The sectoral breakdown helps researchers and policymakers compare trends across agriculture, industry, services, and other segments, and to monitor structural change over time.

The sektor level is widely used in policy analysis and economic planning.
