Eurostat

Eurostat is the statistical office of the European Union, tasked with producing and disseminating official statistics at the EU level to inform policy, research, and public understanding. It gathers, harmonizes, and publishes data that enable comparisons across member states and over time.

As a Directorate-General of the European Commission, Eurostat operates within the European Statistical System (ESS), a collaborative network that includes national statistical institutes and other EU bodies. This system coordinates data collection, validation, and methodological harmonization to ensure consistency in definitions, classifications, and quality across the Union. Eurostat maintains the legal and methodological framework for European statistics and works with member states to improve data production.

Its data cover a wide range of domains, including economy (GDP, inflation, unemployment, government finance), population and social conditions (demography, education, health), trade, industry and services, environment and energy, transport, and digital statistics. Data are published in datasets, statistical books, indicators, and regular releases, and are accessible through the Eurostat website, which also provides metadata and methodological notes.

Its work helps the EU's institutions, national governments, researchers, and the public to compare performance, monitor policy outcomes, and conduct analysis. Eurostat is headquartered in Luxembourg.
