A sebességtartó, commonly known as cruise control, is a system in motor vehicles that automatically controls the engine to maintain a set speed. It allows the driver to remove their foot from the accelerator pedal and relax while still keeping the vehicle at a constant speed. This system is particularly useful for long-distance driving on highways, as it can reduce driver fatigue and improve fuel efficiency by preventing unnecessary acceleration and deceleration.

The basic principle behind sebességtartó involves a control unit that monitors the vehicle's speed, typically through a sensor connected to the transmission or wheels. When the driver sets a desired speed, the control unit activates a mechanism that adjusts the throttle. If the vehicle's speed drops below the set point, the throttle is opened further to increase speed. Conversely, if the speed exceeds the set point, the throttle is closed to reduce speed.

Modern sebességtartó systems can be quite sophisticated. Some advanced versions, often referred to as adaptive cruise control (ACC), utilize radar or camera sensors to detect vehicles ahead. ACC systems can automatically adjust the set speed to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front, braking and accelerating as necessary. This adds another layer of convenience and safety, especially in moderate to heavy traffic.

To engage sebességtartó, the driver typically presses a button on the steering wheel or dashboard. A set speed is then chosen, and the system takes over. To disengage it, the driver can usually press a cancel button, apply the brakes, or in some cases, simply tap the accelerator or clutch pedal. The system is designed to be overridden easily by the driver at any time.
