In simpler mechanical systems, a centrifugal governor is a common example. It utilizes rotating weights that move outward as the speed of the machine increases. This outward movement is then mechanically linked to a throttle or brake, which reduces the input power or increases resistance, thereby lowering the speed back to the desired level. Conversely, if the speed drops, the weights move inward, leading to an increase in power or a decrease in resistance.

More sophisticated electronic speed regulators employ sensors to measure the actual speed, such as tachometers or encoders. This measured speed is then compared to a reference speed. A control unit, often a microcontroller, processes this difference and sends a signal to an actuator, such as a motor controller or a valve, to adjust the system's output and bring the speed back to the setpoint.
